Environmental Education Summer Camp Counselor

Beginning date: late May/early June 2012 (based on availability of applicant)
Ending date: August 31, 2012
Hourly rate: $10/hour

Briar Bush Nature Center's summer camps allow children to experience the wonders of nature through games, hikes, crafts, live animal encounters and free play time. We are seeking 1-2 highly motivated and energetic camp counselors to run a multitude of week-long camps for children ages 4-7. Counselors will report to a full-time staff member but will be independently responsible for every stage of camp planning, preparation and delivery, as well as supervision of the campers. Camps run each week from June 25 - August 31 from 8:30am-1pm or 12-4:30pm (including set-up and clean-up time). Prep work will be done before June 25 and during off weeks.

Job Description and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for small groups (up to 12) children ages 4-7.
  • Independently plan, prepare and deliver daily camp activities include environmental education lessons, handling a variety of domesticated animals, dip-netting in the pond, making crafts, singing songs, etc.
  • Manage 1-2 teenage camp aides for assistance during camps.Handle a variety of domesticated animals (mammals, reptiles, birds)
  • Create information for camper parents
  • Coordinate and work with full-time educators and other staff

Requirements:

  • College age and above – no high school age applicants please
  • Previous experience working with young children in an educational (formal or non-formal) setting required
  • Knowledge of environmental topics (plants, animals, systems, etc.)
  • Strong communication skills
  • Self-motivated; able to set and meet deadlines
  • Enthusiastic and energetic teacher
  • Physically capable of teaching outdoors in the summer
  • Able to set up before and clean up after camp each day
  • Driver's license
  • Able to obtain CPR certification
