tribute to a longtime friend
The Briar Bush community says goodbye to a dedicated volunteer and long-time friend, Roberta McLean. Briar Bush Nature Center was a second home to Roberta, where she volunteered for over 25 years. Roberta began as a trail guide, became the Center’s Volunteer Coordinator, chaired and was a member of the Board of Directors for thirteen years. She also chaired the Nominating Committee and was a charter member of the Griscom Society. The Briar Bush team extends their heartfelt condolences to Roberta’s family and friends. Roberta touched the lives of so many at Briar Bush and shared her love of learning with those around her. She will be missed by many. Through her volunteerism and caring, though, her legacy will be everlasting here at Briar Bush.

Briar Bush Nature Center was a second home to Roberta where she volunteered for over twenty-five years. Roberta began as a trail guide, became the Center’s Volunteer Coordinator and chaired the Board of Directors for thirteen years. She also chaired the Nominating Committee and was a charter member of the Griscom Society.
Roberta was a strong believer in learning and participated in Del Val College’s Continued Learning in Retirement Program where she gained new insights from the many subjects offered and classes she selected. She was a voracious reader, and enjoyed writing stories, communing with nature, and listening to music. Roberta enjoyed being silly and will be remembered for her goofy sense of humor and infectious laugh. On her serious side, she possessed the gift of making people feel special and showing that she cared. Her genuine concern softened troubles as she helped you to smile through the tears. Roberta was much loved, and she will be profoundly missed.
Roberta is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Jane and Ed Wilson, Sue and Eric Kruger; her four grandchildren, Laura Campbell, Aimee Moody, Wendy Wilson, Jonathan Kruger; and her great grandchild, Sylvie Wilson. Her son, Daniel McLean, preceded her in death in 2010.
Donations in Roberta’s memory may be made online at or made payable to Friends of Briar Bush, with "In Memory of Roberta McLean" in the memo line.
